In July, 2018, the FDA began an investigation
into reports of canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in pets eating
certain foods, many "grain-free" labeled, that contained a high proportion
of peas, lentils, other legume seeds (pulses), and/or potatoes in various
forms (whole, flour, protein, etc.) as main ingredients. We have heard that
some large pet food manufacturers and some traditional Western veterinarians
are recommending pet parents avoid "BEG" diets — Boutique companies,
Exotic ingredients or Grain-free diets. Before you panic, read

The pet food recalls continue. The best "wholistic" suggestion to prevent
danger to your pet is -- STOP feeding dry kibble dog food. In our
"wholistic" opinion, dry kibble dog food is the least nutritious form of
food to feed a carnivore. Furthermore, a majority of all pet food recalls is
with dry food. Canned food, freeze-dried food and raw food have a much lower

As the nation ramps up its effort to
contain the coronavirus, COVID-19, we thought we would share what you
can do holistically to add to your current precautions. The basic
holistic question to asked, Is this an immune-enhancing or
immune-depleting thought, food, action, event, etc.? Here are
some examples.
Only positive thoughts — research
has shown our thoughts effect our emotions and our emotions effect our
health. Stress is immune-depleting. When in fear, our mind is focused on
all the bad possibilities that can happened (that have not). This is
spending energy on the future rather than the present. It has been said
that 90% of what people worry about in the future, either is not as bad
as originally thought or did not happen at all. So, why not spend all
that brain energy on positive thoughts instead of negativity? Think of
all the healthy habits you could adopt, like not touching your face,
washing your hands more, covering your sneeze & cough and eating
healthier. Think of all the self-care treatment (sleeping 8 hours, nap,
exercise, walks, gardening in the sun, yoga, meditating, etc.) you could
be doing rather than going out socially. These are immune-enhancing
actions and saves your financial budget too.
Make healthy choices for food — we
all know holistically that white flour and white sugar is nutritionally
immune-depleting.
Russell asks himself before eating a snack, is this immune-enhancing or
immune-depleting? Makes him think each time he reaches for a cookie,
chips or alcoholic beverage. He is not saying we have to totally abstain
from eating our pleasure foods but maybe cut back and gradually replace
them with fruits, vegetables, fermented vegetables (sauerkraut, kimchi)
& beverages (kombucha), cultured products with friendly bacteria (like
yogurt), nut butter, fruit spreads (instead of jam), etc.
Get more exercise, fresh air and
sunshine — a recent study showed working out or exercising 30
minutes 2-3 times per week is not enough to compensate and undo the
unhealthy task of sitting at a desk for 8 hours a day, 5 days per week.
When Russell was a telephone technical support representative, instead
of going out to eat or taking a full one-hour lunch, he ate lunch in 30
minutes in the lunchroom and took a 30-minute walk outside. This helped
to breakup 8 hours sitting at a desk and release the tension of having
to resolve angry client support calls. Getting 30 minutes of sunshine in
the middle of the day was an immune-enhancing plus.
Adequate sleep and rest — How many
of us try to get by on only 6-7 hours (or less) of sleep? Do we have to
be told
that
getting 8 hours of sleep or more is immune-enhancing? Is booking our
social calendar 6/7 night per week healthy? Have you thought about going
back to meditating or just starting? Mindfulness is wonderful for
realizing we are not our thoughts (fears, worries, anxieties). When our
mind is calm, we can think more clearly and rationally on how to meet
the next challenge. When our mind is filled with worries, we act like
Chicken Little ("the sky is falling"). Russell has experienced this
first-hand after his concussion and subsequent mTBI (mild
Traumatic Brain Injury). The resulting
depression and PTSD caused him to be paranoid and look at only
the negative side of things. It was so bad in his early stages of
recovery, that he had to take medication
and get occupational and counseling therapy. By getting 8+ hours of
sleep, taking afternoon naps and through various holistic practices and
products, he has been able to eliminate the medication
and reduce counseling to once per month.
In order to survive and thrive in uncertain
times...
We need to change our mindset, priorities
and habits to be immune-enhancing.
We need to expect the unexpected with ease
and accept all disappointments with grace.
We need to develop maximum flexibility and
adaptability, otherwise we will become extinct, like the dinosaurs.
