Pet Food Recalls

The pet food recalls continue. The best "wholistic" suggestion to prevent danger to your pet is — STOP feeding dry kibble dog food. In our "wholistic" opinion, dry kibble dog food is the least nutritious form of food to feed a carnivore. Furthermore, a majority of all pet food recalls is with dry food. Canned food, freeze-dried food and raw food have a much lower percentage of recalls. For the latest recalls, go to:

Save $10,000 in Vet Bills

Would you invest $20/month ($240/year) to save up to $10,000 in vet bills over the lifetime of your pet? After our 15-year old cat (Iris) recently died, we asked this question. We adopted Iris at age 6 (2007) from a rescue organization. Her former guardian was a veterinary technician, who made liberal use of all the vaccines they had access to. We immediately transitioned Iris, and the other cat we adopted at the same time, to a raw food diet. We added BioPreparation-f2+ (the Core formula for general nutrition and health maintenance) to their food. Iris was obviously addicted to the dry kibble and brand name grocery store canned food she was fed. Here are the initial signs that something might not be right with Iris’ body:

  1. Over vaccination: previous guardian (vet tech.), vaccinated Iris three times in three years with the feline leukemia vaccine. The leukemia virus is suspected of causing lymphoma in cats. So, it is not too much of a stretch to think that over-vaccinating with the leukemia vaccine could pre-dispose some cats to lymphoma.
  2. Finicky eater: Iris was very picky about what flavor meats she would eat. Even more frustrating was her tastes changed from day to day. Iris also did not like any supplements mixed into her food. She would only tolerate a little bit, otherwise she refused to eat her food.
  3. Poor absorption of nutrients: Iris’ coat felt dry and coarse when we first got her. Obviously, she lacked the needed Essential Fatty Acid (Omega oils) from commercial brand pet food. While the other cat’s coat got shiny and glossy within 1-2 months of transitioning to raw food with added BioPreparation-f2+, Iris’ coat took over one year to improve.

At the end of 2010, Iris’ health crisis began. Here are the rough costs for Iris’ healthcare for the rest of her life.

Date Episode Cost
December 2010 Iris stopped eating. Bacterial infection diagnosed first, then advanced intestinal lymphoma or severe IBD. No biopsy done. $5,000+
July 2011 Iris’s stopped eating again and her cancer symptoms returned. Added new homeopathic cancer treatment.
August 2013 Iris stopped eating again. Ultrasound showed acute pancreatitis, thickened intestines, liver inflammation, fluid in the abdomen, probable Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) or returning lymphoma. Hospitalized with feeding tube inserted. $5,000+
December 2016 Iris stopped eating again. Ultrasound showed severe pancreatitis, thickened intestines, liver inflammation and fluid in the abdomen. Hospitalized with feeding tube inserted and sent home. One week later, while still ill with pancreatitis, Iris developed labored breathing. X-rays showed fluid in the lungs. Vet diagnosed congestive heart failure. Iris hospitalized again and put in oxygen cage. Despite treatment, her condition worsened and she died a couple of hours later. $6,500+

Without doing an intestinal biopsy, the vets could not determine whether Iris had gastrointestinal lymphoma or Iris in maigoldssevere IBD. Apparently there is a continuum from IBD to lymphoma—IBD can develop over time into lymphoma. The only way to confirm lymphoma is with an intestinal biopsy, which is invasive. While the veterinary internist would have liked to pursue more testing to get a diagnosis, this was not possible financially and would not drastically change Iris’ treatment anyway. We were not going to pursue chemotherapy if she did turn out to have lymphoma, preferring to treat it wholistically.

From 2007-2010 we gave Iris raw food and BioPreparation-BioPreparation-f2+f2+ (Core formula used for health maintenance). If we had started Iris immediately on the advanced formula with the most antioxidants, BioPreparation-f3+ (Forte formula used for advanced benefits) we would have spent an extra $20/month ($240/year) or $960 over this four year period. Antioxidants are super nutrients for the brain, that are very efficient at balancing the WHOLE body and normalizing ALL the glands and organs. Here are the potential benefits:

  1. Over vaccination: homeopathic remedies and the super nutrition from bio-algae concentrates have been shown to neutralize the effects of over vaccinations and a poor immune system.
  2. Finicky eater: The advanced formula, BioPreparation-f3+, is 5 times more efficient at balancing the body over BioPreparation-f2+ but not 5 times the price. This extra efficiency over four years might have allowed the inflammation in Iris’ gut to subside, so that she would tolerate a wider variety of food and be more tolerant of additional supplements.
  3. Poor absorption of nutrients: Instead of taking over one year to show improvements from all the Essential Fatty Acids (Omega oils) in the bio-algae concentrates’ whole superfood nutrition, her body’s absorption and utilization of nutrients might have improved on BioPreparation-f3+ in shorter time like all our other rescued cats.

So the big questions is, if we invested $960 over the first four years of Iris’ life (when she did not have major symptoms) by giving the advanced formula, BioPreparation-BioPreparation-f3+f3+, could we have reduced the total healthcare costs of $16,500+ towards the end of her life? We believe the answer is, yes. Maybe we would have only saved $10,000 of the total $16,500 but Iris may have lived longer and had a better quality of life. Do we regret anything we did or did not do for Iris? No. Each of our rescued pets come to us with their own unique health challenges, holistic lessons to teach us and a ton of unconditional love and many joyous/amusing moments to share. We cherish each and every health lesson and all the joyous moments they gave us to enrich our lives, our future pets’ lives and those of our clients’ pets. We will start our next rescued pet on the advanced bio-algae concentrates formula, BioPreparation-f3+.
