We live in
interesting times is an
understatement. The following is my holistic perspective of the current
economic situation (October, 2008) based on my broad spiritual, astrological and
eclectic world vision.Being a Baby Boomer, my parents lived through
the Great Depression. There were a few minority, whose fear level
exceeded their threshold, that chose to exit. But the majority of people lived
through it and prospered thereafter. The same will be true about this
"Great Recession" that has presented itself. The current period is just
another cycle in the natural course of our economic history. Over the
last 50 years, there have been 15 bear markets and 15 bull markets. The
bear markets have lasted an average of 10 months with an average decline
of about 30%. The bull markets have lasted an average of 30 months with
an average gain of about 112%.1 So, why are people only
focused on how bad this market is today? It's just another financial
cycle that will soon pass. Let's take a look at the big picture and an even bigger cycle.
The ancient Mayans studied an astrological cycle we call the
Precession of the Equinoxes. This is approximately a 26,000 year cycle, in
which Earth transits through each of the 12 signs of the zodiac for
about 2152 years each. Each of these astrological ages, represents one
month of the grand, Cosmic Year (much like our astrological year). Due to the precession of equinoxes, the
spring equinox moves slowly backward through the constellations of the
Zodiac, so that approximately every 2000 years the equinox begins
taking
place in an earlier constellation. Thus, the spring equinox has been
occurring in Pisces for the past several thousand years and will now begin
to occur in the constellation Aquarius. This is the
background for calling the current times, the Age of Aquarius.
What does this have to do with our current economy?
During the Piscean Age, people blindly trusted leaders, teachers, practitioners,
etc.
and gave their power to someone of a higher or more learned authority.
These leaders ruled from the top-down. There was one authority, one book
of
knowledge and one set of rules governing all. But with the
Age of
Aquarius, things will change. People will be looking for multiple
leaders, a coalition or a group for leadership rather than one ruler.
More emphasis will be placed on what benefits the whole (i.e., group)
rather than individual gain (i.e., greed). The principles of fear and greed will be
replaced by more altruistic goals of win-win for everyone. Any company,
institution or government that does not make this transformation will
eventually cease to exist. This is the transition that we are
experiencing, as we progress into the next evolutionary cycle (2152
years) of the Age of
Aquarius.
I see evidence of this happening from the following trends. More totalitarian governments
(i.e., dictatorships) have
fallen in last 50 years than last 500. It is no longer possible for one
party or political leader to dictate the rules. Bi-partisan efforts and
coalitions are needed to get anything
accomplished. Every
industry has undergone (or is undergoing) a major business
transformation (restructuring) in order to survive these transitional
times. It is now politically correct to become a "green"
company. Business priorities are being reordered from profits first, to
the needs of the customers and even its employees first. We have
already seen this occur in the savings and loan, accounting (e.g.,
Arthur Anderson), telecom (e.g., Adelphia Communications, WorldCom,
Qwest with Joe Nacchio being taken down as an autocratic ruler),
computer (IBM gave up its arrogant "Big Blue" attitude) or Information
Technology (e.g., MiniScribe) and energy (e.g., Enron) industries. The dot.com
industry got burned by its "first to market to beat the competition"
strategy. The airlines industry saw Southwest Airlines with its "customer
service first" attitude become a leader and United Airlines become
an employee-owned company. Now it is the mortgage, investment banking
and financial market industry taking their turn. Sure it is unsettling
as this happens and yes, it may be painful to see one's investments
(e.g., 401k, IRA, stock portfolio) lose 25% of its net value but its
only on paper.
In order to prosper in these uncertain
economic times, we must realize we are all connected and are all in this together.
Sticking to the old patterns of fear and greed will only worsen things.
As Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said, "Isolationism and
protectionism will not offer a way out." Look how the U.S. Treasury
Department, Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC), Federal Reserve
System, Group of Seven (G-7) finance ministers, Group of 20 (G20)
Nations, International Monetary Fund (IMF) and European Union
are all working together (Aquarian principle) to resolve this financial
uncertainty. One cannot conduct business as
usual but must discover, invent and create new ways to prosper (e.g.,
Internet). Those with the flexibility, creativity and willingness
to change will prosper.
One can cower in fear, hunker down at home,
hoard money in a mattress and be part of the problem OR choose a new way
and be part of the solution.
 We
personally have chosen to invest in something that we have total
control over, that will continue to pay dividends (no matter how low the
financial market goes) and that no one can take away from us: our
education and our health. The government can't tax it, the banks
can't lock it up and the returns will continue to accumulate as long as
we continue to invest.
Here's to
your holistic health and economic wellness.

Another Astrological Correlation
"Mercury retrogrades repeat every 79
years** with an exactness that defies our concepts of the chaos and
confusion that we attribute to Mercury retrograde. The Mercury
retrogrades of 2008 were also experienced in 1929. The Mercury
retrograde that occurred October 1929 was in the sign of Libra and
turned retrograde and direct at the same degrees we will experience in
2008, and at the same calendar days 1929. Throughout history reviewing
79 year cycles of Mercury retrograde, the retrogrades covered the same
sign, the same degrees and approximately at the same calendar days. "
