Pet Food RecallsHere is the latest recall: Blue Buffalo's Life Protection Formula Fish and Sweet Potato Recipe The pet food recalls continue. The best "wholistic" suggestion to prevent danger to your pet is — STOP feeding dry kibble dog food. In our "wholistic" opinion, dry kibble dog food is the least nutritious form of food to feed a carnivore. Furthermore, a majority of all pet food recalls is with dry food. Canned food, freeze-dried food and raw food have a much lower percentage of recalls. ********************************************************************************* IBD, Pancreatitis, Allergies and Other Digestive Disorder LessonsThis article is not meant to put forth holistic “cures” for IBD, pancreatitis, food allergies and other digestive disorders but to share the wholistic lessons we have learned that may bring you and your pet closer to Freedom From Illness. Every day our clients evaluate natural (but not necessarily holistic) products using the Western medical paradigm of supplementing the symptoms. They use the linear principles of allopathic Western medicine in giving XX capsules/day and expecting YYY results in ZZZ amount of time. When these expectations are not met, they conclude the product does not work and move on. These natural products and holistic methods may indeed work, if evaluated using a truly “wholistic” approach, as we share below. According to medical research it takes 6 months in a healthy body for every intestinal cell to be regenerated. This is the normal birth/death cycle for intestinal cells. This assumes a relatively healthy diet (eating some fresh fruits and vegetables for humans and a 60-80% meat + fat diet for carnivorous pets) and average lifestyle (adequate sleep, water and not extremely stressful) will produce an adequate amount of absorption and utilization of nutrients from food (not supplements) for the body to accomplish this. First holistic lesson: allergy or prescription diets only address the symptoms and not the cause. You heard the old doctor joke—Patient: My head hurts when I do this motion. Doctor; Stop doing that motion. Changing food or feeding a prescription diet is the same answer. While they might decrease or even eliminate the symptoms, they do nothing to balance the original cause of the digestive disorder. Many of our clients spend thousands of dollars rotating or eliminating different foods for themselves or flavors of meat for their pet in an attempt to eliminate the digestive disorder. All they are doing is chasing the symptoms and the imbalance will manifest with more symptoms or in another way eventually. If changing food or feeding a prescription diet does decrease the symptoms, then do it but also look for a more holistic way to balance the body, especially the brain. We have used a fermented whitefish product, called Seacure, to provide immediate relief in both people and pets from symptoms of IBD, vomiting, diarrhea and food allergies. But that is not the total "wholistic" answer. While digestive symptoms show up in the intestines and stomach area, one can be sure there is also an imbalance in the brain (for example, pituitary, pineal, hypothalamus, adrenals, thyroid) where digestion is regulated and controlled. We use bio-algae concentrate products (BioPreparation and BioSuperfood) to feed and balance the glands in the brain. Second holistic lesson: not enough time—the second holistic lesson we see clients miss, is not giving a product or using a holistic method (for example, change in diet) enough time for the body to regenerate and rebuild the damaged intestinal cells. Suppose a body with IBD, pancreatitis or other digestive disorders has 50% of its cells dysfunctional (for example, thickening of the intestinal walls as shown by ultrasound). According to research, it should take a healthy body 3 months to replace 50% of its intestinal cells. But an unhealthy body with damaged intestinal cells is not absorbing 100% of its food nutrients, so one should expect the ideal 3 months of regeneration to now take at least 3-6 months. One cannot give a product just 1-2 months and expect total remission of symptoms. If one sees just a hint of benefits after 2 months, we would suggest continuing for at least another 6 months to give the body a chance to heal before properly evaluating the product or change in diet. Third holistic lesson: not giving enough product to account for the body’s digestive inefficiency—all drugs and most supplements publish suggested guidelines by body weight. These guidelines are based on studies using an “average” body. Suppose a body with IBD, pancreatitis or food allergies is absorbing and utilizing less than 50% of its nutrients because of a thickened stomach lining or intestinal walls. The intestinal villi hairs may be sluggish and plaque coats the intestines preventing normal absorption. There may be hidden tumors caused by GMO food (wheat, corn and soy) obstructing digestion. We and our manufacturers have found that some clients with digestive issues need to take up to double the starting suggestions (per body weight) just to see any beginning benefits. After the body starts to regenerate the damaged intestinal cells (or organs), the product can be slowly decreased while continuing the rebuilding benefits. Drugs, isolated digestive supplements and prescription diets may be needed to temporarily alleviate the symptoms for comfort. But we have found a whole body approach to digestive disorders and patience to be the best tools towards Freedom From Illness.
