Pet Food Recalls

In July, 2018, the FDA began an investigation into reports of canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in pets eating certain foods, many "grain-free" labeled, that contained a high proportion of peas, lentils, other legume seeds (pulses), and/or potatoes in various forms (whole, flour, protein, etc.) as main ingredients. We have heard that some large pet food manufacturers and some traditional Western veterinarians are recommending pet parents avoid "BEG" diets — Boutique companies, Exotic ingredients or Grain-free diets. Before you panic, read our truly holistic perspective in previous newsletters:

  1. FDA Investigates Potential Link between Certain Diets and Canine Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM)
  2. Grain-Free Foods Linked to Canine Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM): Part 2

The FDA has also investigated elevated levels of Vitamin D in dry dog foods, which can be toxic and cause serious health problems. Eight brands and twelve different diets have been recalled. The FDA found an alarming 70 times the intended amount of vitamin D. To learn more about this recall, please read Life's Abundance blog post. None of our Life's Abundance pet food is affected by this recall.

The best "wholistic" suggestion to prevent danger to your pet is - STOP feeding dry kibble food. In our "wholistic" opinion, dry kibble food is the least nutritious form of food to feed a carnivore. Furthermore, a majority of all pet food recalls is with dry food. Canned food, freeze-dried food and raw food have a much lower percentage of recalls. For the latest recalls, go to:

Dog Food Recalls or FDA website

Why Organic Is Better

According to the Environmental Working Group's 2019 produceShopper's Guide to Pesticides in Produce:

  1. Overall, nearly 70 percent of the conventionally grown produce sold in the U.S. comes with pesticide residues.

  2. More than 90 percent of sampled strawberries, apples, cherries, spinach, nectarines and kale tested positive for residues of two or more pesticides.

  3. USDA's tests found a total of 225 different pesticides and pesticide breakdown products on popular fruits and vegetables Americans eat every day.

If you thought washing your conventional fruits and vegetables eliminated pesticide risks, before the above tests were conducted all produce was thoroughly washed and peeled just as consumers would prepare food at home, showing that simple washing does not remove all pesticides.

Did you know that Nature put 90% of a fruits' and vegetables' antioxidant green pepperhealth benefits in the peel and pulp just below the skin. This is to protect them from natural pests and oxidation if their outer skin breaks. So by washing and peeling the skin, one not only could be ingesting some 225 different pesticides but also eliminating 90% of the fruits' and vegetables' antioxidant nutritional benefits. Why are these statistics on organic food important?

A 2018 study published in JAMA, Association of Frequency of Organic Food Consumption With Cancer Risk1, found those that ate the most organic food had a 25% lower risk of cancer. The study looked at over 68,000 adults. The distribution of cancer among the participants was as follow:

  1. blood testBreast cancer = 34.3%

  2. Prostate cancer = 13.4%

  3. Skin cancer = 10.1%

  4. Colorectal cancer = 7.4%

  5. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma = 3.5%

  6. Other lymphomas = 1.1%

In addition to reducing your cancer risk, organic foods are reported to be higher in nutrients, contain more antioxidants, taste better and are gentler (greener) on the environment.

All the above is amplified in our furry children when we consider that pet food manufacturers purposely use ingredients that are unfit for human Mikki holding saucerconsumption. The non-organic grains in pet food are more likely to contain toxic molds, pesticides and man-made contaminants (such as melamine) than grains for human consumption and this is perfectly legal. Is this why pets have a higher rate of cancer? Inflammatory bowel issues, autoimmune conditions (SLO, AIHA) and allergies seem to be running rampant in our holistic practice.

In our "wholistic" opinion, it is much better and more cost-effective to be holistically proactive BEFORE symptomsIris show up, rather than medically reactive AFTER symptoms blow up. Discover how we could have saved $10,000 in vet bills, over the 15-year life of our cat who had advanced intestinal lymphoma (or severe IBD), in our previous newsletter article, Save $10,000 in Vet Bills. You choose the right priorities for you, your family and 4-legged children.
