The pet food recalls continue. The best "wholistic" suggestion to prevent
danger to your pet is — STOP feeding dry kibble dog food. In our
"wholistic" opinion, dry kibble dog food is the least nutritious form of
food to feed a carnivore. Furthermore, a majority of all pet food recalls is
with dry food. Canned food, freeze-dried food and raw food have a much lower
percentage of recalls. For the latest recalls, go to:
What do all the
above conditions have in common? Our 15 year old cat, Iris, had one or
more of them in five separate
episodes
in the last 6 years. You may have read past newsletter articles about
her. On Thursday, Dec. 15, she finally succumbed after a brief illness.
This short wholistic tip of the month will be a brief summary of her
last episode. Russell will write more about all the holistic lessons she
taught us when he feels ready. Right now Russell's (mTBI) brain is still
numb and in shock.
Two weeks ago Iris
stopped eating and began hiding. From past experience, we knew to take
her immediately to the
vet, rather than wait and hope she would improve. When the initial pain
and anti-nausea medications did not work over the weekend, we did an
abdominal ultrasound first thing Monday morning. That is when she was
diagnosed with severe pancreatitis and triaditis (inflammation of the
small intestines, pancreas and liver). After 2 days of hospitalization,
she was stable enough to have an e-tube inserted into her esophagus for
feeding. After another day of hospitalization to recover, we brought her
home. The first couple of days at home, we were encouraged when Iris
licked up some bites of canned food and scratched happily on the
scratching post. She also purred loudly when fed through the tube and
asked for more pets during the day. But after those first couple of
days, she
went
downhill. She starting hiding again, drooling (indicating nausea) and
would not eat any food on her own. While tube-feeding her on Thursday
night she refused more food and jumped down to just sit in her litter
box—clearly in pain, wanting to "eliminate" her discomfort. She then got
out and sat on the floor shifting her weight from side to side. Then she
developed labored breathing. At this point, Margaret took her to the
emergency vet where x-rays showed she had fluid in her lungs and likely
congestive heart failure (CHF). They put her in an oxygen cage and gave
her a diuretic. We decided to hospitalize her at least for one day to
see if she would respond to treatment. The vet felt she could be
stabilized with a day or two of hospitalization and then receive ongoing
treatment for CHF. Unfortunately, she took a turn for the worst before
Margaret left the hospital and passed away. All the above happened
within 4 hours.
